Premium tax credit repayment calculator
Earned more than you told the Marketplace? Starting with 2026 coverage there is no cap on paying back the extra subsidy. See the number now, while you can still update your income and shrink it.

Subsidy advanced to your insurer
$4,401
$367/mo
Credit you actually qualify for
$2,688
$224/mo
Excess to repay
$1,713
What changed: through tax year 2025, your repayment would have been capped at $1,600 (single filer at 332% of the poverty line). The One Big Beautiful Bill Act removed that cap for 2026, so you repay the full $1,713, which is $113 more.
The rule is now asymmetric, so estimate high
If you tell the Marketplace a higher income than you end up earning, the IRS still gives you the difference as a refund at tax time, and the old safe harbor still protects you if you estimated at least 100% of the poverty line in good faith. If you estimate low, you repay the full excess with no cap. With variable income, round your estimate up.
Fix it now, not in April
Report your new income at HealthCare.gov or your state exchange today. The Marketplace lowers your advance subsidy for the remaining months, which shrinks the amount you repay.
